What is the difference between Bioglitter® and traditional glitter?

The main difference lies in the material and the environmental impact.

Traditional glitter (e.g. polyester (PET) glitter) is made from synthetic polymers, which are very stable and long-lasting. These provide a high level of brilliance, but are not biodegradable and can remain in the environment as microplastics. Subject to increasing restrictions since 2023 under the EU Microplastics Regulation.

Bioglitter®, on the other hand, is made from bio-based and biodegradable materials and offers a visual effect similar to that of traditional glitter—but with significantly better environmental sustainability and reduced microplastic pollution.

When should you use Bioglitter®, and when is traditional glitter a better choice?

Bioglitter® is particularly suitable when:

  • Sustainability and environmental requirements are a top priority
  • regulatory requirements (e.g., the EU Microplastics Regulation) are relevant
  • cosmetic or decorative applications should be made more environmentally friendly

Classic glitter is often used when:

  • maximum technical stability is required
  • very high resistance to temperature or chemicals is required
  • industrial applications without sustainability restrictions are the primary focus

Current regulatory requirements (EU Regulation 2023/2055) must also be observed: As of October 2023, freely dispersible microplastics and loose glitter are generally restricted. Exceptions and transition periods apply to certain applications.

Can you replace traditional glitter 1:1 with Bioglitter®?

A complete 1:1 replacement is not possible in all cases, as material properties, density, reflectivity, and processing may vary slightly. Bioglitter® can be used in a very similar way in many applications; however, minor adjustments to the formulation may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Bioglitter® sometimes appears less “sparkly” than PET glitter, since traditional polyester particles produce very high light reflection and a metallic brilliance. Bioglitter® relies more heavily on sustainable, bio-based materials, which can make the visual effect appear slightly softer depending on the series, without losing the typical glitter effect—this is fully preserved, ensuring that a high-quality, visually striking glitter look is still achieved.

Will glitter work well in my production process?

Yes—in general, all SiLi Glitter and Bioglitter® systems are designed for industrial and cosmetic use. However, there are differences depending on the product type and application system.

Dispersibility in Systems
The particles can generally be easily incorporated into cosmetic and technical formulations. Uniform distribution is important to achieve a homogeneous appearance in the final product.

Miscibility & Homogeneity
All systems are designed for good miscibility. Proper process control (e.g., stirring speed and mixing time) is crucial to ensure uniform distribution of the particles.

Sedimentation / Stability in Liquids
Depending on the viscosity of the system, the settling behavior may vary. Emulsions, gels, or coatings can be formulated so that the particles generally remain well dispersed.

How do particle sizes affect processing and appearance?

Particle size is one of the key factors determining the final effect in the end product. Fine particles provide an even, subtle shimmer and integrate very well into liquid formulations. Medium-sized particles offer a balanced combination of shine and visibility. Large particles create strong, visible glitter effects with high visual impact.

Is Bioglitter® suitable for use in food?

No. Bioglitter® from Sigmund Lindner GmbH is generally not suitable for use in food products. The Bioglitter® product lines were developed specifically for use in cosmetics, decoration, printing, crafts, and technical applications—but not for direct contact with or processing in food products.

How are metallic, iris, and holographic effects created in glitter?

Physical Principle: Specular Reflection

The metallic glitter effect is caused by specular reflection of light. Glitter particles have an extremely thin layer of metal—often aluminum—inside them, which reflects light like many tiny mirrors. This metal layer is very thin.

On top of this reflective layer are transparent color coatings that produce the respective metallic shade.

Physical Principle: Refraction & Reflection

Opal-like and iridescent glitter displays colors that change depending on the viewing angle—an interference or “color-travel” effect. This phenomenon occurs when light is refracted, deflected, and reflected within the material, and overlapping light waves reinforce or cancel each other out.

In traditional plastic glitter, these effects are created by over a hundred extremely thin, alternating layers of two plastics that have different refractive indices.

The glitter particles are completely transparent and show their greatest color intensity against dark backgrounds.

Bioglitter® PURE is a natural, aluminum-free glitter with transparent, opalescent effects. It is highly stable in water-based, acidic, alkaline, and surfactant-containing applications.

Physical Principle: Diffuse Reflection

Holographic glitter creates a spectral rainbow pattern by breaking down the incident light into its color components. Each particle acts like a tiny prism. This is made possible by an ultrathin reflective aluminum layer combined with a microscopic surface structure that scatters and refracts the light.

Holographic glitter produces its most striking effects under direct light, such as sunlight or LED spotlights. This creates a particularly intense, kaleidoscope-like play of colors.

Bioglitter® HOLO looks just like conventional holographic plastic glitter in terms of color and appearance.

Will our current wording still be appropriate in the long term?

It is not possible to make a blanket statement here, as EU Regulation 2023/2055 is being implemented in phases and different transition periods apply depending on the specific application.

For many applications, however, this means that adjustments to product development are already necessary today. At the same time, depending on the area of application and the type of use, additional transition periods through 2035 may apply.

Where is Bioglitter® manufactured?

Bioglitter® is produced in Germany by Sigmund Lindner GmbH (SiLi). The company has its own production facilities in Germany and is continuously further developing Bioglitter® technology there.

Development of biodegradable glitter began as early as 2010, with SiLi and the British company Ronald Britton Ltd. working on it simultaneously. Today, Bioglitter® made by SiLi stands for sustainable production, quality, and innovation—all made in Germany.

In addition, Bioglitter® is made from plant-based cellulose, which is processed into a film, coated, and then cut into glitter particles. Genuine Bioglitter® from SiLi can be identified by several characteristics:

What happens if glitter from a product ends up in wastewater when you remove your makeup?

Why isn’t Deco Bioglitter® suitable for use in cosmetics, even though it is biodegradable?

The most important point is: biodegradable does not mean approved for use in cosmetics. Deco Bioglitter® is designed for technical applications (printing, coatings, decoration), not for cosmetic products.

Does the glitter comply with the EU Microplastics Regulation 2023/2055?

Generally speaking: yes, the product concept is designed with that in mind. The EU regulation applies to intentionally added microplastics. Deco Bioglitter® is based on biodegradable or bio-based raw materials and was therefore developed as an alternative to traditional PET glitter.

Important:

  • No persistent microplastics as defined by the regulation
  • The goal is long-term regulatory compliance
  • However, the assessment remains application-dependent in the end product

The product line is clearly positioned as a future alternative to microplastic glitter, even though the legal assessment always depends on the end use.

How bright is it compared to PET glitter?

Deco Bioglitter® achieves a very high visual quality, though there are slight differences due to the material. In practice, the visual difference compared to PET glitter is often minimal.

Are there any samples available before placing an order?

Yes, samples are available before placing an order. They are provided upon request and are intended to allow you to test the material under real-world conditions—for example, in terms of workability, visual appearance, and compatibility with your own system.

Which TV series is vegan?

Most of the Deco Bioglitter® lines are vegan. The entire PURE line, DECO 60, as well as SPARKLE V3 and HOLO contain no animal-derived ingredients and are therefore vegan. One exception is Deco SPARKLE PF (plastic-free). This variant is not vegan.

How long is the delivery time? Do you have any items in stock?

Delivery time depends on the series, color, particle size, and order quantity.

Some standard products are in stock or are manufactured regularly in short production cycles, which generally means they can be delivered more quickly. Custom colors or special designs, on the other hand, are produced to order and have correspondingly longer lead times.

In summary: Yes, standard items are in stock, but delivery times vary depending on the product and availability.

Yes, Deco Bioglitter® SPARKLE, Deco Bioglitter® PURE, and DECO 60 are all available in various particle sizes and colors. This allows you to achieve different visual effects.

Deco Bioglitter® SPARKLE is designed to create highly visible, classic glitter effects. The effect changes significantly depending on the particle size. Fine particles produce a more uniform, high-quality shimmer with subtle light reflection. Medium and larger particles significantly enhance the sparkle effect and create a clearly visible, highly reflective appearance. Overall, SPARKLE is designed to produce brilliant, decorative, and, in some cases, holographic effects.

Deco Bioglitter® PURE takes a different visual approach. Here, the focus is more on softer effects. Depending on the particle size, the result is either a uniform shimmer or clearly defined color effects. Compared to SPARKLE, PURE often appears less “sparkly” but creates a calmer visual impression.

DECO 60 Bioglitter® SPARKLE is designed primarily for large-scale decorative and creative applications. The particle sizes here are also variable, but the focus is on highly visible, easy-to-apply effects for DIY projects, events, and decoration. Finer sizes produce a more subtle effect, while larger particles create bold, highly visible glitter effects that really stand out, especially in creative or decorative settings.

What is glass glitter, and how durable is it for use?

Glass glitter consists of small glass particles that are available as glitter flakes, nuggets, or beads. Thanks to their transparent or reflective surfaces, they create particularly intense shimmer and refraction effects.

Glass glitter is one of the oldest glitter products from Sigmund Lindner GmbH and has a long tradition there. These decades of experience form the foundation for high-quality, durable effect materials.
