The Bioglitter® logo stands for transparency, quality and environmental awareness worldwide. As a trademarked symbol, it identifies products that have been proven to comply with microplastics regulations and the highest ecological standards.
It serves as a reliable proof of authenticity on environmentally conscious products in Europe, North America and Latin America. Consumers and businesses can see at a glance that Bioglitter® stands for certified environmental responsibility and innovative material development.
How is Bioglitter® produced?
Natural sparkle – From plant to party
Bioglitter® begins where sustainability takes root: with trees. A transparent film is produced from plant-based cellulose, which forms the basis for our glitter. A special coating is then applied to provide colour, shine and durability. The film is then cut into tiny particles. The result? Environmentally friendly glitter, ready for any glitter party – completely free of microplastics.
We remain committed to the development of Bioglitter® and are continuously working on optimising our products to be more environmentally friendly – with a focus on effectiveness and application.
Bioglitter® clearly stands out from conventional glitter – a decisive advantage as customers’ environmental awareness grows. The Bioglitter® logo, registered by Sigmund Lindner, stands for tested quality and sustainable safety.
How Bioglitter® is setting new standards
Patented technology – unique in the world
Bioglitter® – the first and only patented glitter that has been proven to comply with the new EU microplastics regulations (Regulation 2023/2055).
It is based on plant-based raw materials and is biodegradable under aerobic conditions (OECD 301).
Thanks to patented technology with more than 99% biodegradable components, Bioglitter® is unique worldwide.
Beware of counterfeits: Not all bioglitter is Bioglitter®. PLA-based glitter does not comply with the Microplastics Regulation.

How is Bioglitter® changing the world of glitter?

- In 2010, research and development into biodegradable glitter began.
- In 2019, Bioglitter® became thefirst glitter product to receive the TÜV seal of approval “OK biodegradable WATER”. Bioglitter® is based on a plant-based carrier material and is biodegradable in natural fresh water.
- In 2023, the Microplastics Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 comes into force:
Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 regulates the restriction of synthetic polymer microparticles (microplastics) that are intentionally added to products. Among other things, it affects glitter in cosmetics, toys, paints and decorations. Bioglitter® is not subject to the restrictions of the EU regulation as it is made from natural, biodegradable materials.
Tested according to ISO standards: ISO 14851 and ISO 14852.
Complies with the requirements of EU Regulation 2023/2055 on microplastic avoidance.
Transitional periods or exemptions apply to certain applications. Responsibility lies with the distributor. Please check the regulations for your product.

Most Deco Bioglitter® products are 100% plastic-free and based entirely on plant-based materials. Cosmetic and Craft Bioglitter® are over 99% plastic-free and designed for maximum environmental compatibility. Some products also meet the highest internationally recognised standard for biodegradability in fresh water.

The plastic problem –
Time for change

The world is facing a major problem: plastic pollution. Even though glitter only accounts for a small part of this, it still contributes to the problem. ‘Plastic glitter’ is a type of microplastic that takes hundreds of years to decompose in the natural environment.
Glitter is tiny and is often used in disposable products – such as cosmetics, greeting cards, clothing and craft materials. Composting facilities are therefore hardly the place where glitter ends up.


When bathing, washing clothes or synthetic materials, glitter ends up in the wastewater. Even after water treatment, it can still find its way into lakes and rivers. There, it can harm small organisms and ultimately enter the food chain.

We found that glitter needs
a radical rethink
Compostable glitter does not solve the problem, as it rarely ends up in compost. The solution lies in avoiding polymeric materials – they do not decompose quickly and safely in natural freshwater environments.


Bioglitter® is a genuine innovation and sets new standards for environmentally friendly glitter. It has been developed to degrade quickly and safely in natural water. This makes it easy to communicate its environmental compatibility in a clear and understandable way.
It is also important to note that the amount of microplastics from glitter is relatively small compared to other sources such as tyre abrasion, fibres from synthetic clothing or weathered exterior coatings.


But even if the impact of plastic glitter is small, it still counts. That’s why we are passionate about continuing to develop our award-winning Bioglitter® product range and driving innovation forward.

How does Bioglitter® work?

Bioglitter® is not soluble in water and requires microorganisms from the environment to biodegrade.

When Bioglitter® enters the natural environment – for example, in fields, sewage water, or rivers and lakes – microorganisms begin to break down the biodegradable portion. This process produces carbon dioxide, water, and biomass.

Bioglitter® remains completely stable in an environment without microorganisms. Without microorganisms, no biological degradation takes place.
The speed at which Bioglitter® decomposes depends on local environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity and the concentration of microorganisms.

The story of Bioglitter® – from idea to innovation
Bioglitter® represents a new generation of glitter: plant-based and biodegradable. The development of environmentally friendly glitter took place in parallel at two companies – ours and the British company Ronald Britton Ltd. As early as 2010, both companies recognised the environmental problems associated with conventional plastic glitter and worked independently on sustainable alternatives.
With over 170 years of experience in glitter production, its own manufacturing facilities in Germany and a clear focus on sustainability, SiLi is consistently driving Bioglitter® technology forward.

Trusted companies, brands and retailers receive permission from us to use the Bioglitter® logo on packaging, advertising materials and websites – as a clear sign that the product contains genuine Bioglitter®. The Bioglitter® logo is a registered trademark and may only be used with the permission of Sigmund Lindner GmbH. The use of this logo on products means that they contain genuine Bioglitter® or have been manufactured with it.
