Reference – Well construction project for central hospital
The Zentralklinikum Lörrach, a central hospital currently under construction in south-west Baden-Württemberg, will make a significant contribution to healthcare with 677 beds and a psychiatric unit with 145 beds. The hospital campus covers an impressive area of around 9.7 hectares.
A central component of this project are seven wells, which will be used not only for technical systems such as heating and air conditioning, but also as firefighting wells. These wells will ensure a safe, self-sufficient supply for the hospital. Construction of the wells began in January 2024 and will be used exclusively for the ZKL Lörrach.

Innovative well construction technology: Dr Uwe Lohr on the advantages of glass balls in hydraulic engineering
In an exclusive short interview, Dr. Uwe Lohr, project manager and also responsible for coordination, purchasing and scheduling, provides exciting insights into this special project:
Dr. Lohr, how satisfied are you with the deliveries?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: Despite the logistical challenges on site – there was only limited space available for the well construction site – the just-in-time delivery with SiLi worked excellently.
What are the technical details of the wells?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: A total of seven wells were drilled – three production wells and four infiltration wells (infiltration wells). Over 200 tonnes of glass beads with diameters of 5–6 mm and 2.85–3.45 mm in the counter filter were used for the construction. Each well is approximately 20 metres deep, has a bore diameter of 2,000 mm and a casing diameter of 1,200 mm. The high-performance wells were equipped with stainless steel wound wire filters. Eder Brunnenbau in Deutschland GmbH took over the entire construction process – from drilling and shaft construction to completion of the wellheads – and also coordinated the cooperation with other trades involved.
What advantages do glass beads offer in this project?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: Glass beads offer excellent performance in wells and meet the requirements of DIN standards. A secure water supply is vital, especially in a hospital. We expect the glass beads to have a long service life, which also makes them an important safety factor for firefighting wells. Their hydraulic properties are another advantage, as they can quickly provide large quantities of water in an emergency. Thanks to the precise deliveries for each section of the well, the work on the construction site was carried out smoothly and efficiently.
Do you already have experience with glass beads from other projects?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: So far, I have only received positive feedback on wells with glass beads. Eder Brunnenbau in Deutschland GmbH has also successfully completed numerous wells using glass beads. I am sure that we will see even more projects in the future where glass beads can prove their effectiveness.
We are proud to be part of this important project with our SiLibeads® glass beads and look forward to further exciting developments!
