New fountain construction project with our SiLibeads® Glass Beads

Zentralklinikum Lörrach, a central care hospital currently under construction in the south-west of Baden-Württemberg, will make a significant contribution to healthcare provision with 677 beds and a psychiatric unit with 145 beds. The hospital campus covers an impressive area of around 9.7 hectares.

A central component of this project are seven wells, which are used not only for technical systems such as heating and air conditioning, but also as fire extinguishing wells. These wells ensure a secure, self-sufficient supply for the hospital. Construction of the wells began in January 2024 and will be used exclusively for the ZKL Lörrach.

In an exclusive short interview, Dr. Uwe Lohr, project manager and also the person responsible for coordination, purchasing and scheduling, provides exciting insights into this special project:

Dr. Lohr, how satisfied are you with the deliveries?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: Despite the logistical challenges on site – there was only limited space available for the well construction site – the just-in-time delivery with SiLi worked extremely well.

What are the technical details of the wells?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: A total of seven wells were drilled – three production wells and four infiltration wells (absorption wells). Over 200 tons of glass beads were used for the construction, with diameters of 5-6 mm and 2.85-3.45 mm in the counter filter. Each well has a depth of around 20 meters, a drilling diameter of 2,000 mm and an extension of 1,200 mm. The high-performance wells were equipped with stainless steel winding wire filters. Eder Brunnenbau in Deutschland GmbH was responsible for the entire construction process – from the drilling and construction of the shafts to the completion of the well heads – and also coordinated the collaboration with other trades involved.

What advantages do the glass spheres offer in this project?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: Glass spheres offer outstanding performance in wells and meet the requirements of DIN standards. A reliable water supply is particularly vital in a hospital. We expect glass spheres to have a long service life, which also makes them an important safety factor for fire extinguishing wells. Their hydraulic properties are a further advantage, as they can provide large quantities of water quickly in an emergency. The work on the construction site was carried out smoothly and efficiently thanks to the precise deliveries for each well section.

Do you already have experience with glass spheres from other projects?
Dr. Uwe Lohr: So far I have only received positive feedback on fountains with glass spheres. Eder Brunnenbau in Deutschland GmbH has also already successfully realized numerous fountains with glass spheres. I am sure that we will see even more projects in the future where glass spheres can prove their efficiency.

We are proud to be part of this important project with our SiLibeads® Glass Beads and look forward to further exciting developments!
