SiLibeads® glass beads – Dispersion of active ingredients for eye drops
Our SiLibeads® glass beads are indispensable components in the pharmaceutical industry, ensuring the highest quality and safety in the manufacture of medicines.
Sterile suspensions for special eye drops, for example for the treatment of macular degeneration/glaucoma, contain poorly soluble substances. SiLibeads® glass beads serve as mechanical dispersing aids, which break down the particles of the active ingredient into smaller, evenly distributed units through their movement and friction, thus producing a homogeneous dispersion. The glass beads, which are added to the active ingredient solution and solvent in ball mills or dispersion units, are agitated and generate mechanical forces. The glass beads typically have a diameter of 1–6 mm.
Since eye drops come into direct contact with the eye, it is essential that equipment and aids (including glass beads and containers) are sterilised to minimise the risk of infection. The beads are specially washed and prepared for sterilisation at the customer’s premises.

Applications
- Treatment of macular degeneration/glaucoma: SiLibeads® glass beads are used as dispersing agents in the manufacture of eye drops. They help to break down poorly soluble active ingredients through mechanical friction and distribute them evenly in the solution. This creates a homogeneous suspension, which is necessary for the effective treatment of macular degeneration and glaucoma.
- Comminution and homogenisation of active ingredients: SiLibeads® glass beads are used in bead mills or dispersion units to break down poorly soluble active ingredients through mechanical forces. This ensures that the particles are evenly distributed in the solution and improves the effectiveness of the end product.
- Sterilisation for pharmaceutical applications: Since eye drops come into direct contact with the eye, all materials used must be sterile. SiLibeads® glass beads are specially cleaned and prepared for sterilisation to ensure the highest safety standards in pharmaceutical production.
- Other applications: SiLibeads® are also used as beads in medical devices, as carrier materials for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and play an important role in diagnostics. In addition, they are used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, where they help to improve the effectiveness of therapeutic procedures.
